I don't think I've ever been more indifferent about an election than I am today. But one thing did hit me and that is how much people have spent on Prop 8, the ballot initiative to decide whether California calls the union between Gay Partners Marriage or Domestic Partnership.
Do you realize an estimated $75 Million dollars has been spent fighting over this?
For a word. That's all this is, a word. Gay Partners are currently guaranteed all the rights and privileges of married couples so that doesn't change. No matter what. All that changes is what the Government calls it.
Not even what individuals call it. The same people who think it isn't the same as heterosexual marriage today are going to continue thinking that tomorrow. That's not going to change. Churches still aren't going to consider it a marriage, that's not going to change either.
All this changes is the designation put in a field somewhere in a Government database. For that, people have spent $75 million dollars!
Put that in real terms: The cost for an underprivileged kid to go to 2 years of community college and then 2 years at a state university is $14,352. That means you could have sent 5,225 kids to a full four years of college for the amount that has been spent on this. A word.
No rights will be changed, no opinions will be changed, nothing. The only thing that changes (if it fails) is how the Government officially designates the relationship. That's it!
The things we choose to fight over...
